I-355 Expansion Plans Could Make Illiana Expressway More Viable

While it is being played as competition to the Illiana Expressway in the media, an extension of I-355 between I-80 and I-57 would fit perfectly into Daniel Burnham’s vision of a third ring road around Chicago if the proposd Illiana Expressway from I-65 in Lake County, Indiana to I-57 in Will County, Illinois was coordinated so that it could link up with the proposed I-355 expansion.

The Northwest Indiana Times had this little tidbit about the Illiana Expressway in a Christmas Eve item giving advice to Santa Claus on what he should give to local political leaders and the like and suggested giving coal to the anti-Illiana crowd:

Opponents of the Illiana Expressway study. The proposal was to study the feasibility of constructing a new expressway that would serve as an outer beltway for the Chicago area — beginning at I-94 in LaPorte County and continuing into Illinois. The not-in-my-back-yard crowd adamantly opposed not just construction, which would have been a separate discussion once facts were known, but even the very idea of discussing the proposal.
