Illinois Leaders Look At Illiana Expressway

Illinois transportation officials are looking at plans to build the Illiana Expressway, including a proposal to connect the proposed highway with I-55.

Reports the Chicago Tribune:

Tollway officials said they would work with the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning, which is developing the region's most comprehensive land-use and transportation plan to date, due in 2009.

The tollway's effort could ultimately benefit the agency if some of these highways become part of its system.

The action was prompted by a proposal last month from tollway board member James Roolf of Joliet to form an exploratory committee on the so-called Illiana Expressway.

The Illiana Expressway would bypass the heavily congested Northern Indiana-Chicago region by connecting Interstate Highway 65 with Interstate Highway 57.

Roolf suggested that the tollway become involved in the project and possibly extend the expressway all the way to Interstate Highway 55.

You have no idea how feasible the Illiana Expressway could be if the Illinois Tollway gets involved. Given projected traffic volumes, especially trucks, toll revenue could support the construction and operation of the Illiana without the need to increase taxes.

If the Tollway is allowed to combine forces with INDOT the Illiana could happen quickly. What needs to happen is for the locals on both sides of the border to step up and say they want that team.

If you wait for the Illinois Department of Transportation to get funding and get its act together you are going to wait for a very long time, while construction and, especially, land acquisition costs skyrocket.

This blog should revive itself and pursue the idea of the Illiana as a toll highway.

Bummer, this means that Illinois will get years ahead of us again on a plan to connect on the east west axis.

This road will get built eventually, and Indiana will end up with less say so, and less research dollars.

I get so sick of a couple farmers in Jasper County shutting down progress.

    Hi Anonymous and DaltonsBriefs:

I'd love to see the Illiana Expressway be built -- it would open up more economic growth in Northwest Indiana by providing another easy route into Northeastern Illinois -- especially since it appears that the Illiana will eventually connect with I-355 which would give easy access to the collar counties and their jobs.

People could move to Indiana and commute to their higher paying Illinois jobs.
