Video -- Clerk Fights Back & Beats Robber With A Broom

An Indianapolis Marathon employee fought back -- using a broom -- when a man tried to rob the gasoline station and convenience store.

The clerk who had been cleaning the store fought with the alleged robber after locking the subject in the store.

Reports the Indianapolis Star:

A man armed with a butcher knife and a broken pool cue robbed a Marathon gas station on Indianapolis' Southeastside early today (Oct. 2), according to a police report.

The man entered the gas station at 8404 Southeastern Avenue just after midnight carrying half a pool cue and demanded money, the clerk told police. The man then moved behind the counter and emptied the cash register, taking $165, the police report said.

The clerk, who had been sweeping the floor, told police he ran toward the counter and began striking the man with the broom.

Wild Wild NW Indiana -- Bank Heists & B-Ball Shootings. We've Got Videos!

It was the wild, wild Northwest Indiana yesterday with three bank robberies happening in the South Shore Region. Adding to the mayhem, a Roosevelt High School basketball player was shot in his school's parking lot in Gary.

A Munster bank was knocked over, resulting in a chase into Lansing, Illinois with several crashes and finally a van exploding into flames.

While police were investigating the Munster bank robbery aftermath in Lansing, a fool tried to rob a bank not too far away using a bike as a get-away vehicle and predictable failure.

And, to keep the saying "things happen in threes" valid, a bandit hit a Valparaiso bank.

Deadly Two Trains vs Minivan Wreck Caught On Surveillance Tape

The operator of the South Shore rail line has released a surveillance video tape showing a driver racing to beat a freight train to a railroad crossing while another train approaches in the opposite direction.

The minivan's driver attempt to beat the two trains is unsuccessful and two children are killed at the Northwest Indiana railroad crossing in Hammond.

The video was released on the Northwest Indiana Times' website:

Surveillance video appears to show a Hammond woman racing a freight train to an intersection Saturday morning before two trains hit her minivan and killed two of her children.

"It seemed that she (Edie Bolanos) was so intent on beating the eastbound train, she never even saw the westbound train that hit her," Hammond police Sgt. Michael Jorden said.

Hammond Police Chief Brian Miller sees a lesson in the tragedy.

"My heart goes out to the family," Miller said. "My only hope with the release of this (video) is that other people will learn a lesson, and maybe we can avoid another tragedy in the future."

The south bridge of Interstate 290 over the Chicago River, which carries 139,000 vehicles a day and has a sufficiency rating of 2. A sufficiency rating summarizes detailed inspection data for a bridge's deck, superstructure and substructure.
Pretty scary stuff considering that the I-35W bridge in Minneapolis had a rating of 50 percent.
