Jesus Came To The Statehouse …
Filed Under politics, religion | Leave a Comment
State Senator Dennis Kruse said a prayer at the statehouse and ended it by saying he was praying in the name of Jesus.
This has caused some to become enraged. (Warning — extreme language).
I don’t understand what the big deal is. If someone had said a prayer to Allah, or to G-d, or to Gia, or Mother Nature, or to the Dali Lama, or to money, or some sports hero, or to their favorite political contributor, or even to Word Press, it wouldn’t really bother me.
I say celebrate diversity in all forms, including tolerance and understanding of people who hold religious beliefs that might not be the same as yours.
Be secure in your own beliefs and those holding diverse opinions and foreign beliefs won’t be so threatening.

Left & Right Agree It’s Time For Smith To Go
Filed Under Northwest Indiana, corruption, politics | 6 Comments
Lake County politics may be bringing together the left and the right in an unexpected way. Both Democrat and Republican blogs agree it is time for Lake County Councilman Will Smith, Jr. to resign.
Says South Shore Progressive in Time For Smith To Resign:
This seems like a no brainer to me. Is Will Smith serving his constituents or himself?
Though a federal jury convicted him of the crime, Smith also said he believes he is not technically convicted until sentencing.
In case anyone was wondering, that would be himself.
Buzzcut at Blue County in a Red State calls for the same.

To Tax Or Not To Tax, That Is The Question
Filed Under Northwest Indiana, South Shore Line, politics, property tax crisis, tax revolt | 4 Comments
While most people are getting ready to spend some quality time with relatives and loved ones as they prepare for Thanksgiving next week, Northwest Indiana’s legislators will gather in Indianapolis Tuesday to talk about whether they should try to get a $30 million tax passed to pay for South Shore commuter rail expansion or wait until property tax reforms are passed
If taxes are raised to pay for the $350 million local match needed for the $1 billion project to expand the South Shore Line to Valparaiso and Lowell, Northwest Indiana lawmakers are looking at slapping those taxes on motor vehicle registrations ($50 per car — ouch!), gasoline taxes (more $$ at the pump — can anyone say $4/gallon?), or local income taxes (there isn’t much support a Lake County income tax).
Maybe the solution is cutting back somewhere and using the money saved for the South Shore expansion.
Taxpayers can be thankful that the local legislators are up for reelection in 2008. That should help guide their thoughts when it comes to figuring out a solution to the property tax crisis that is affecting homeowners all over the state as well as figuring out ways to pay for the South Shore expansion.
