There’s always some sort of investigation going on in the Region. This time Lake County prosecutors and the Indiana attorney general are looking into Lake County’s printing contracts, reports the Post-Tribune’s John Byrne.
The two law enforcement agencies haven’t decided which will be in charge of the investigation, according to Lake County Prosecutor Bernard Carter. It could also mean the Lake County Commissioners select other printers.
Lake County officials are investigating whether two bidders for government printing contracts illegally joined forces in an effort to freeze out a third company vying for the work.
County Prosecutor Bernard Carter said Thursday he had been notified of allegations that Hammond printing companies A-1 Union Graphics and Sheffield Press Printers & Lithographers had colluded in their bids for 2007 contracts.
“Right now the information we have is incomplete,” Carter said. “The situation definitely deserves further investigation. We have been in contact with the Attorney General’s Office to determine which agency will proceed with that investigation.”
Officials from A-1 and Sheffield could face civil or criminal charges if it is determined they violated Lake County’s non-collusion agreement, Carter said.

Schueb Hopes Thousands Show Up For Tax Vote Tomorrow

Lake County Commissioner Gerry Scheub says that he hopes thousands of Lake County taxpayers show up to let the Lake County Council know how they feel about a new tax imposition at tomorrow’s 4 p.m. Council meeting.
Before voting to veto the income tax Dec. 19, (Commissioners Gerry) Scheub and (Fran) DuPey said they were embarrassed to be Democrats because the Democratic-controlled County Council had not allowed residents to voice their opinions on the tax proposal.
Scheub threatened to leave the Democratic Party if the council did not allow testimony before Friday’s vote to override the veto.
“I just hope there are a thousand people there Friday,” Scheub said after learning testimony would be allowed.

Will Buzzcut at Blue County in a Red State file a tax lawsuit seeking to have a court find that Will Smith, Jr.’s vote makes the Lake County Council’s vote in favor of a 1% income tax void?
Writes Buzzcut in a comment about an earlier post about the Lake County income tax passed by the Lake County Council and vetoed by the Lake County Commissioners:
I’ve already approached the legendary attorney John Price (remember him?) to see if he’s interested in a lawsuit on my behalf.
He says that it’s pretty clear that Will Smith was impeached by law and is not a councilmember, and thus anything that he voted on is null and void.
