Congressman Pete Visclosky was robbed outside of a Merrillville grocery store Friday night, reports the Northwest Indiana Times.

Police are looking for a man who robbed U.S. Rep. Pete Visclosky on Friday night outside a local supermarket.

“It was terrifying,” the 11-term Democratic congressman from Merrillville said Saturday while describing the strong-arm robbery, which he said probably lasted less than a minute.

H/T to Blue County in a Red State since I was away from the internet, television, and newspapers yesterday and missed the news report.

The store is not mentioned in the article. Why would that be?

    Hi Buzz,

I immediately thought of a place when I read the article. I bet the paper doesn’t want to bring any bad publicity to the establishment.

    Hi Buzz,

The Post-Tribune has the “where” component:

U.S. Rep. Peter J. Visclosky said he was terrified Friday night when he was robbed outside a Merrillville store by a man who grabbed him from behind and demanded his wallet and keys.

The 12-term congressman from Merrillville was robbed about 9:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the WiseWay store near 93rd Avenue and Taft Street while putting groceries into his car.

I’m not all that familiar with MV aside from Rt. 30. Is that a bad section of town?

    Hi Buzz,

The location doesn’t strike me as being a bad area.

It’s close to the Lake County Government Center and right on the Crown Point - Merrillville border.

I suspect it was a crime of opportunity rather than anything else — the bad guys like to go to nice areas because they assume people have more money.
