Will Birthday Party Bans Sweep The Education World
A New Jersey school wants to ban birthday parties in an effort to protect children from the hazards of birthday cakes and other foods prepared for birthday celebrations.
While it seems preposterous now, I bet it is only a matter of time before birthday parties are banned in all schools -- including those in Northwest Indiana. If foie gras is illegal in Chicago and trans fats are prohibited in cities around the country, it is only a matter of time before birthday celebrations are verboten in Valparaiso and other South Shore Region cities.
After all, it's for the children!

Some schools won't celebrate ethnic holidays - in a Chicago catholic school - St. Patrick's day is simply cultural diversity day!
Hi Dave,
I can see limiting birthday and holiday celebrations to prevent interruptions to the schools, but it is sad to see everything in life reduced to the blandest and least offensive common denominator in an effort to prevent someone from filing a lawsuit.
It's surprising that a Catholic school in Chicago would stop celebrating St. Patrick's Day -- but reflecting overall society -- it doesn't surprise me very much when educators look to ban birthday celebrations and other relatively harmless activities out of fear of someone complaining.
