Mixed Emotions About BP's Plans

A view of Lake Michigan
from Ogden Dunes
I've been following the news of British Petroleum's plans to release more ammonia into Lake Michigan as they start refining Canadian shale oil, as I am sure most other people in The Region have been over the last couple of weeks.
I have mixed emotions. I don't like being dependent upon foreign oil, so anything that we can do to increase domestic or continental oil production is a welcome thing. Also, increasing jobs at the BP Whiting Plant is always a welcome thing as it helps the area's economy.
However, I drink Lake Michigan water, so I don't want to ruin my source of drinking water. Also, Lake Michigan is one of The Region's natural wonders, so protecting it from damage is our duty.
I signed the petition Illinois Senator Dick Durbin and Rep. Rahm Emanuel are circulating through the magic of the internet. I'm not opposed to BP increasing domestic oil production, but I want it to be done in a way that ensures the safety of our drinking water and Lake Michigan.
I hope BP -- through working with local leaders and universities -- is able to figure out a solution that will allow The Region to grow its economy while protecting our natural resources.
