Michael Johns

Michael Johns starts the night with Aerosmith’s “Dream On.”

Randy says he is looking to see who can win American Idol. He hears some pitch problems. “It was alright to me.” “This show is about being the best singer.”

Paula disagrees with Randy’s assessment of Michael Johns telling him that he sings as good as he looks.

Simon thinks it was a good performance, but he is “slightly with Randy.” Simon doesn’t like it when Michael Johns impersonates a rock star. He thought the blues angle would have been better.

Syesha Mercado

Syesha Mercado sings “I Believe” by Fantasia.

Randy says he didn’t find the special connection that he found with Fantasia with Syesha Mercado‘s version tonight.

Paula says that not too many people can take on songs like Fantasia‘s “I Believe.” “Hands down, this is one of your shining nights.”

Simon says there is going to be a comparison because Fantasia won with that song. What it lacked was the wave of emotion when Fantasia sang the song. Simon does say that Syesha sang “I Believe” well.

Jason Castro

Jason Castro sings “Over The Rainbow” while playing his ukulele with a nod to Israel Kamakawiwo’ole.

Randy says to Jason Castro: that was crazy, molten hot!”

Paula says that “it was the perfect song. I love that version of the song.”

Simon says “fantastic!”

Kristy Lee Cook

Kristy Lee Cook sings “Anyway” by Martina McBride.

Kristy Lee Cook always looks good, but I can help but think that she’s going to go home pretty soon.

Randy says he loves it.

Paula tells Randy to lay off the pitch commentary. Paula says Kristy Lee Cook did her best tonight.

Simon says “I thought you were very good indeed.”

Maybe Kristy Lee Cook isn’t going home tomorrow?

David Cook

David Cook sings “Innocent” by Our Lady Peace.

Paula is on her feet swaying to the song.

Randy says he’s a huge David Cook fan but says that he doesn’t get it this week.

Paula disagrees. She likes David Cook‘s total package.

Simon opines that he doesn’t like the performance saying it was “pompous.” Simon says this was David Cook‘s weakest performance.

Carly Smithson

Carly Smithson sings Queen’s “The Show Must Go On.”

I want to like Carly Smithson, but she doesn’t connect with me.

Randy says the song seems disconnected.

Paula says Carly Smithson‘s voice is great, but she doesn’t feel engaged with her.

Simon says Carly Smithson looks good, but that it was an unusual song choice. Simon says Carly loses control of the song and it came of angry. Simon says Carly might be in trouble tonight.

David Archuleta

David Archuleta is up next. David Archuleta has been the popular favorite for many weeks now. Will he be able to keep up his popularity?

David Archuleta sang “Angels” by Robbie Williams while playing the piano.

Randy says he loves David Archuleta.

Paula says “fantastic.”

Simon praises the song choice but says that David singing was a bit nasally. Simon predicts that David Archuleta sails through to the next round.

Brooke White

Brooke White sings James Taylor’s “You’ve Got A Friend.”

I like Brooke White. She’s beautiful, but she’s also vulnerable. There’s something very attractive about that combination.

Randy says is was ok.

Paula says it was a perfect way to end this episode of American Idol.

Simon says it was pleasant, but it wasn’t original.
