This may be the story that most affects American national security in the coming years that we aren’t paying attention to at this time but is most influenced by things that we do every day in the United States.
Drug cartels and the Mexican military are battling each other for control over the country. Recently, a huge gun battle broke out between the Mexican government and drug gangs in Reynosa.
If the world’s economy continues to decline and the cartels continue to gain power and territory, we will have to worry about Mexico’s fall to criminal and revolutionary forces.

According to the U.S. Joint Forces Command’s report:
“The Mexican possibility may seem less likely, but the government, its politicians, police and judicial infrastructure are all under sustained assault and press by criminal gangs and drug cartels. How that internal conflict turns out over the next several years will have a major impact on the stability of the Mexican state. Any descent by Mexico into chaos would demand an American response based on the serious implications for homeland security alone.”
