David Archuleta takes the first slot on tonight’s American Idol competition featuring Mariah Carey‘s “When You Believe.”
Randy says David Archuleta can sing anything. Paula praises David Archuleta saying that he made Mariah proud. Simon weighs in saying that David Archuleta has set a benchmark for the singing competition.
Carly Smithson is up next with Mariah Carey‘s “Without You.”
Randy says that he likes that Carly Smithson challenged herself with the song. Randy says Carly needs to believe in herself when she sings the lower notes. Paula likes that Carly showed some vocal restraint. Simon says he wanted to hear Carly Smithson sing to song, but he doesn’t think that she pulled it off.
Cutie Syesha Mercado takes to the stage to sing Mariah Carey‘s “Vanishing.”
Randy says Syesha Mercado did a good job singing. Paula praises Syesha saying it was magical. Simon says technically it was good but that song choice may be a factor because people don’t know the song.
Brooke White sings Mariah Carey‘s “Hero.” I always like Brooke, but I don’t see her as this year’s winner.
Randy says he was digging the song until the bridge. Paula calls Brooke White authentic. Simon says the vital ingredient was missing.
Kristy Lee Cook sings Mariah Carey‘s “Forever.” Kristy Lee Cook is looking very pretty as well. I’m not sure that she’ll be the American Idol, however. Will AI want another country singer this year?
Randy says he didn’t think it was amazing, but Kristy Lee Cook stepped up at the end. Paula says Kristy Lee is a smart woman. She’s blown away by Kristy Lee Cook and says Kristy Lee could have a hit with the song. Simon says Kristy Lee Cook didn’t give him chills, but says she was smart. Simon says the song just wasn’t great.
David Cook is up next with “Always Be My Baby.” Mariah Carey says she was surprised he’d chose the song. She says the way David Cook sings it sounds haunting.
David Cook could easily be the next American Idol.
Randy says David Cook is ready to make an album and calls his performance brilliant. Paula says David Cook‘s version could be in a movie soundtrack. Simon says it was like coming out of karaoke hell and into a breath of fresh air — it was original, daring and stood out by a mile.
Jason Castro has to feel lucky wrapping up tonight’s American Idol with Mariah Carey‘s “I Don’t Want To Cry.”
Going right after David Cook could prove to be very tough. Jason Castro‘s not bringing the brilliance to his song that David Cook did with his. But, the crowd is giving him a good ovation.
Randy says he didn’t really love it — it was like a weird beach luau and someone was playing music far away. Paula wants to be at that luau with Jason Castro singing, however. Simon says that he agrees with Paula — it was a cool version.
Simon says that the guys completely won the night.

Mariah Carey promoting E=MC2
The Malaysia Star Online reports that Mariah Carey will make another appearance on American Idol this Tuesday. The sexy singer was recently featured on Idol Gives Back singing her hit Fly Like A Bird.
In case you’ve missed Mariah Carey on MTV’s premiere party for The Hills or on the American Idol charity event Idol Gives Back or Saturday Night Live or on the new heavy-rotation Macy’s ad, the singer would like you to know she has a new album, E=MC2. She’ll be on The Oprah Winfrey Show Monday and back on Idol Wednesday to remind you, in case the countless airings of her new No. 1 single, Touch My Body, on radio and the video channels somehow doesn’t.
