Police have arrested a person of interest in the shooting death of Josiah T. Shaw — the baby who was killed during a carjacking in Gary — on a Porter County warrant, reports the Northwest Indiana Times.

A 33-year-old man arrested on a warrant in Porter County was being held as a person of interest in the shooting death of a 13-month-old baby in Gary late Monday.

Police were not releasing the name of the man or any other information about him.

Josiah T. Shaw of the 5800 block of Forrest Court in Gary was pronounced dead at The Methodist Hospital’s Northlake Campus in Gary at 10:15 p.m., according to a spokeswoman for the Lake County coroner’s office.

Gary Police are looking for a man who shot and killed baby Josiah Shaw after carjacking a car driven by the toddler’s mother. A Gary SWAT team and Hobart K9 unit responded to the call but couldn’t locate the killer on Virginia Street.

The baby’s mother, Kwana Shaw, was injured in the carjacking, reports Christin Nance Lazerus in the Post-Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times.

Josiah Shaw died at about 10 p.m. at The Methodist Hospitals in Gary. His mother, Kwana Shaw, was in unknown condition at the hospital.

Gary Police had found Josiah in a red Ford Explorer on the 1700 block of Virginia Street, near the city’s downtown.

His 29-year-old mother had called police at about 7:40 p.m. to report that a man drove off with the vehicle containing her son after she was carjacked, said Gary Police Lt. Del Stout.

Various news reports have different ages for the baby. The Chicago Tribune reports the baby was 13-months-old while the Post-Tribune writes Josiah Shaw was 15-months-old.

The shooting was reported around 7:35 p.m. in the 500 block of West 21st Avenue, but it was unclear if that was where the original carjacking took place, officials with the Lake County coroner’s office said early this morning.

Josiah T. Shaw, who lived in the 5800 block of Forest Court in Gary, was taken from the red sport-utility vehicle to Gary Methodist Hospital where the toddler died from gunshot wounds to the chin and left pelvic area, according to the coroner’s office.

The Northwest Indiana Times reports Josiah Shaw was flown by helicopter to a Chicago hospital.

The baby was flown by helicopter to a Chicago hospital after the shooting about 9 p.m. Monday at 17th Avenue and Virginia Street near Broadway, according to NBC5 News.
