Thing are out of control at the Gary Schools — and it’s not necessarily the students.

The Post-Tribune calls on the state to take over the Gary school system.

Most of Gary’s problems stem from an inability for schools to educate and a lack of student will to learn. School board members who feed like pigs from the public by diverting funds from learning for their personal gain make the situation worse.

Writes the Post-Tribune editorial board:

Once and for all, it’s time to end credit-card abuse by board members like Andrea Ledbetter, who cares more about buying cheesecake in Hawaii than curriculum issues in Gary. Does she or any of the School Board members ever attend educational conferences in Indiana? Or Lake County? …

Board member Jesse Morris owes an apology to the police officer who arrested him. Instead, the board suspended the officer for arresting a belligerent Morris, who interfered with an investigation of gunplay outside a school.

The School Board is a disgrace. The act is old. The plot lines are the same. Can anyone say “enough”?

People are going to have to make a choice for the future of their city, or do as thousands are doing and vote with their feet.
