The Catholic Church in Indiana is gearing up for an election year First Amendment battle over federal rules set to take effect about a year from now that would require health plans offered by church institutions to offer contraceptive coverage.

Priests across the country raised the issue by reading letters from their bishops regarding the church-state issue, reports ABC News.

In Merrillville, Father Peter Muha read a letter Sunday from the Gary Diocese’s Bishop Dale Melczek alerting parishioners to the issue and asking them to pray. Muha warned that the ruling might lead to Catholic school and hospital closings.
