Should video parenting time be allowed in Indiana?

Illinois allows video parenting time, according to Sam Hasler, publisher of the valuable Indiana Divorce and Family Law blog.

Family law lawyer Sam Hasler raises some great questions about whether Indiana’s Parenting Time Rules should be modified to allow for video parenting time in cases where distance is a factor in family law cases.

Take a look at Sam Hasler’s post and weigh in if you think video parenting time is a good or bad idea and whether it should be an option that is added to the Indiana Parenting Time Guidelines.

I have already made a presentation to the Domestic Relations Committee on this issue and have legislative backing for it to be introduced to the General Assembly next year. The important thing with this technology is that it not be used in place of physical visitation but be supplemental. It can also be used as a means to reintegrate a child into a parent’s life who has been deemed a physical threat without the higher costs of supervised visitations. Thanks for raising this issue here.

    Hi Stuart,

I’m interested in following the progress of this issue through the legislature. Thanks for making your presentation to the Domestic Relations Committee.

I didn’t even think about use of video parenting time as a way to rebuild parent-child relationships in situations where in the past supervised visitation would be necessary. It does make sense that the video option be available as a way to cut costs, while working toward the best interest of children in Indiana.
