Teens are arrested and charged with battery against a girl on a Portage school bus.

After the news of the arrests spread around Portage, more victims come forward telling stories to police of being terrorized by the three, according to news reports and Portage Police.

When I rode the school bus many years ago, students couldn’t do anything without the bus driver knowing about it.  I remember the driver stopping the bus for minor rules violations.  It’s too bad the old-time school bus drivers aren’t around to keep an eye out violence against female students.

If the news reports about the horror these three caused their victims are proven true and a court convicts on the charges, these three subjects — who are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law — need to do some serious time to protect society.

I think someone deserves a good beating. I miss the days when teachers could give swats. I know I got my share and I am better person for it.

Wow. I thought the bus was bad when I was in school! I was fortunate that we moved within walking distance of my high school when I was a sophmore.

I don’t know how many times since school started this year that I have thanked my lucky stars that my kids are home! The first year Bree and Dustin rode the bus Bree was targeted by an older student on the bus. He told her scary ‘stories’ (think scary slasher movies)that kept her up at night…and he told the bus driver she was using vulger words (ha!) trying to get her in trouble. This was KINDERGARTEN! I can’t imagine how bad it would be in middle school…

    Hi Dave,

I wonder if we’ve gotten too far away from punishment out of fear of hurting a student’s feelings that we’ve allowed chaos to rule and the strongest to prey on the weak, including the school staff and teachers.

I don’t advocate beatings, but I can see the value of some sort of punishment that fits the crime and that gets the offenders’ attention, rather than whatever we do now that seems to discourage the good while empowering the evil.

    Hi Traci,

Middle school was the worst — at least 7th grade — until I figured out the key was to find a group and stick with them, rather than trying to go it alone.

This was in NJ where it wasn’t uncommon for kids to try to bully each other. When we moved up to the local high school in NJ, all of the bullies from middle school suddenly were more friendly because they didn’t know the kids from other districts. But, high school was a little more easy going, both in NJ (I attended one-semester) and IN. Kids were more mature than they were in 7th grade.

High school in Indiana was pretty decent.

My Bloomington bus was filled with professors’ kids, so the bullying that went on was academic, rather than physical. Peer pressure was to perform well in school within my group.

My bus also had the stoner crowd, but they weren’t into anything that got then revved up, so having them half-asleep wasn’t a bad thing either. I think a couple of those 30-something overgrown kids still live with their parents back in the old neighborhood today.

Times probably haven’t changed — it all comes down to parenting and what kind of societal pressures are placed on children to conform to norms.
