I’m Glad We Didn’t Get 28 Inches of Lake Effect Snow
Filed Under LaPorte County, Northwest Indiana, Porter County
The lake effect snow clean up has begun in Porter and LaPorte Counties. I heard one Valparaiso city resident say that she received over 24 inches of snow the other day. That’s a lot of snow, even in Northwest Indiana where people are generally well-prepared for heavy snow falls.
I does remind me that I need to get my snow blower served before the next heavy snowfall. We’ve been lucky that most of the snow falls in Crown Point have been easily taken care of with a little shoveling. But, as we’ve seen with the lake effect snows this year, it doesn’t take much more than being in the path of wind flow from Lake Michigan to be deluged with a ton of snow.

Oh my word! 28 inches???? (Excuse my shriek!) Holy Cow! I about died when we got 10 inches last week and then four more this week. I’m a whimp! (Of course in my defense…it is all shovel city here. A couple of my neighbors have snow blowers…but no one I’m friends with. Darn it!)
28 inches is insane!
I’m tellin’ ya, with winters like these homeschooling is where it is AT! You just have to remember to make hay (go to Wal-Mart or Kroger) while the sun shines and the driveway is clear! LOL

Yeah… I don’t know how people live in Valpo. I lived in Buffalo for a number of years, and lake effect snow just sucks.
We got 36 inches in 24 hours once. That was crazy. And not two miles away got no more than a dusting. Lake effect is weird.
The last winter I was there, we got 60 inches in 10 days. It was constantly snowing. When I got up in the morning, I shoveled. When I came home from work, I shoveled. Before I went to bed, I shoveled. I had to shovel out the front yard so the dog could take a crap!
Munster got hit with some lake snow a couple of weeks ago. At least it’s easy to shovel, it’s so light and airy. I’ve got a crappy little one stage snowblower, and it took care of it no problem.

we had 22 inches at our house Chris the most I remember

Hi Traci,
It must be nice to not have to run out to work every day, especially when its snow or there’s bad weather.
We were lucky where I am. The heavy lake effect was about 15 miles to the east.
Hi Buzz,
I remember seeing video a while back from Buffalo showing insane amounts of snow — snow the likes that we can’t even imagine. I bet the Porter-LaPorte snow fall of this season was comparable to what Buffalo sees.
Hi Steve,
I think the most snow I’ve seen in NWI is the 1998 snowfall when lake effect snow shut down I-80 / I-94 and dropped about a foot of snow. I can’t imagine what it was like getting almost double that amount of snow like Valparaiso and Michigan City received.
I spoke with someone today who said he was in Porter County for business and snow was falling at 4 inches per hour during the storm.
