American Idol | Kansas City
American Idol does Kansas City auditions Wednesday night and since it’s early in the show it’s time to separate those who can from those who can’t. Thousands showed up and only 27 made it through to Hollywood.
A blonde cutie — Chelsea Marquart — tries to sing but isn’t able to impress the judges. Simon says her singing sounded like a cat falling from the Empire State Building. Ouch.
Ashley Anderson makes a mistake on a Simon Cowell-written song, but she redeems herself by doing a great job signing and impressing the judges. Simon says Ashley Anderson sang the best song this audition. Four yeses from the judges.
Casey Carlson is another cutie who does a good job singing. Simon and Paula like Casey Carlson. Four yeses for the trip to Hollywood.
Brian Hettler. WTF? Slam the gong. Grab the hook and pull him from the stage. Simon hated everything. When it’s time to retreat and save face the dude goes for a second shot with another song. Not a good plan when the judges didn’t appreciate the first song. You’re never going to make up for a bad first impression with Simon.
Four terrible male singers hit the American Idol audition stage. They weren’t so bad that they standout. I’ve forgotten who they were even before I finish writing this sentence.
Von Smith only gets one song to make a good impression. Will he do it? Cue the suspenseful music after he’s done singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow because it’s time for American Idol to make some money.
Back from the break. Von Smith’s fate is in the judge’s hand. Randy likes him. The other judges like Von Smith because he’s interesting and is unusual. Kara even remarks the Von Smith has a big instrument — his voice.
Jason Castro’s brother arrives at the AI auditions. Michael Castro says Jason is “girly” because he has emotions. Michael Castro — pink hair and all — steps up to show his stuff. Paula seems to like young Michael Castro. Simon says it was “goodish.” Kara says Michael Castro is “ballsy” and “cocky.” Four yeses for Hollywood.
A dude dressed in yellow with a banana. Hook time. Get off the stage.
Matt Breitzke has a wife and kid and also a voice. Kara disagrees with Randy and says he has natural talent. Paula says yes. Simon agrees with Paula and Kara. Simon likes Matt Breitzke’s heart.
Jasmine Joseph is a jazz girl who sings Somewhere Over The Rainbow. The judges look shocked when she’s done with her song. Jasmine Joseph doesn’t even wait for the judgment. She exits the stage after seeing the judges’ faces without hearing their verdicts.
Jessica Furney is young but she has a great voice. Simon says Jessica Furney stands out. Randy says Jessica Furney is a natural. Happy Birthday — Jessica Furney’s birthday is the day of the auditions — four yeses.
Sisters Asia McClain and India Morrison sing a fun rap song dedicated to Randy. Asia McClain sings first. India Morrison also sings. India Morrison gets the golden ticket. India Morrison has a good vibe — keep an eye on her.
Jamar Rogers sings a little loud and a little over the top, but he gets the Hollywood vote — four yeses.
Danny Gokey is a Robert Downey Jr look alike who is also friends with Jamar Rogers. Danny’s wife died four weeks before the audition. Very tragic. Danny Gokey’s going to Hollywood and could be one of the best so far according to Randy.
A gaggle of terrible singers show the bad side of female singing talent.
Anoop Desai aka Noop Dog wows the judges. Simon mentions Anoop Desai’s clothes are geeky. He’s going to Hollywood with advice from Paula to not worry about his clothing (which was basic college wear — tan shorts with a button down shirt).
Andrew Lang brings his own cheerleaders to warm up the judges. Can he live up to the big build up? Andrew Lang gets the judges clapping (except Simon). Maybe. Andrew Lang doesn’t make it through despite the effort leaving the cheerleaders crying.
Asa Barnes is a band director who is impressing Kara and Paula with his version of Michael Jackson. Simon likes Asa Barnes. Asa Barnes is going to Hollywood with four yeses.
Michael Nicewonder wants to prove wrong those who think he can’t sing. I don’t think he’s going to accomplish the goal with the American Idol judges. Simon suggests Michael Nicewonder should write greeting cards. He’s not going to Hollywood.
Dennis sings for the judges. Simon didn’t get it. Paula says yes. Simon says no. Randy says yes. Kara says yes. I missed Dennis‘ last name, but saw that he’s from Illinois.
Video shows people with their golden tickets who weren’t featured on the show — except for a split second or two. We’ll learn more about them during American Idol Hell Week.
Mia Conley tries to sing Loving You by Minnie Riperton. It’s already guaranteed that not to work. Mia Conley doesn’t make it and says God is going to get the judges. Scary, but strangely alluring. There’s always something about crazy hot women, but I digress.
Lil Rounds starts of strong and has the judge’s heads bobbing. Kara likes Lil Rounds. So does Paula who says she is one of the best she has heard. Simon says Lil Rounds is fantastic. We’ll see Lil Rounds in Hollywood.
