Posting by email can be challenging for users wishing to use their Gmail accounts.

The built-in WordPress post by email feature doesn’t work with SSL email accounts such as Gmail.

Postie — a WordPress plug-in — also doesn’t work with SSL when downloaded from the site that appears in Google searches and on WP’s support pages, although I did spot a post on a blog that mentions editing some PHP lines in one of Postie’s files can resolve the issue. I wonder why Postie hasn’t been updated if a few snippets of edited code are all that is needed for the fix.

For those of us who don’t want to try figuring out how to edit Postie’s code, set up a cron job or alternatively add code to our footers to check email for new posts, Posterous.com seems to be the easiest post by email solution for WordPress.

Let me know if the are other post by email services or updates to Postie that work with Gmail by leaving a comment, since it is always worthwhile to know about alternatives.
Posterous’ set up is easy and quick – just fill in your account info for your WordPress blog after signing up for your Posterous account and confirm your email address. To send a post by email, just send your message to blog@posterous.com (or post@posterous to post to all of your other services such as Twitter or Flickr).

SMS messages are also supported as well by sending a text to 41411 with POST at the start of your text message from a cell phone associated with your Posterous account. The SMS message will be posted as the title of a blog post, so keep it short and sweet when using that method.

Posterous supports tags added to the subject line, but I’m not sure if those tags translate into WordPress tags. I’ll have to do some experimentation to see what happens if Posterous tags are used when posting to WordPress.

If you can read this post, it is a sign that Posterous worked properly.
