Georgia Under Attack in Cyberspace
Filed Under Cyber Command, Cyber War, Georgia, Ossetia, Russia
The Russians are attacking the small country of Georgia over Ossetia on two fronts — a military battle for land and a second front to control cyberspace.
Wired reports that Russian hackers have been attacking various .ge domains as part of an assault against Georgian internet sites in the days leading up to the air and ground assault against Georgia’s territory by Russian troops hoping to oust Georgia’s leadership — a leadership that has close ties to the west.
IntelFusion calls the internet attacks “full scale cyberwar.”
It’s a brave new world when air and ground assaults are led by hacker vanguards.
Maybe increased cyber attacks on various military and economic internet sites will be seen as a harbinger of an invasion in various parts of the world?

I posted some of my research on the South Ossetia-Georgia-Russia issue over the weekend. On the one hand Russia has obviously over-reached in their attempt to supposedly “protect” the South Ossetians from Georgian atrocities. On the other hand, Russia is actually attacking a democratic country that is one of our allies. (http://daltonsbriefs.blogspot.com/2008/08/some-research-on-south-ossetia.html)
Good pick up on the cyber-attacks.
Kevin Tracy posted more thoughts on this as well this afternoon:

My link didn’t hyper since I put in parethesis earlier, so selfishly reposting.
Hi Steve,
Thanks for the links!
[...] As Georgia and Russia continue Denial of Service (DoS) attacks on one another and as Ron Paul supporters shut down this blog for a while last year, it’s become increasingly apparent how the free flow of information via the internet has become a critical and irreplaceable part of modern society. Yet, the very same free-market, capitalist principles that have made the internet what it is today are the same principles that are being argued to destroy the digital free market of ideas that has previously been fostered by the Internet.
