Shoppers from Chicago are coming to Northwest Indiana to save tax money now that Cook County’s highest in the nation sales tax took effect earlier this July.

While I usually don’t support higher taxes, if Cook County wants to increase theirs a little bit more to help out Northwest Indiana’s housing and retail businesses, I’m all in favor!

It’ll be interesting to see if this will have a more adverse effect on Chicago business or not. I think not, most people air on the side of convenience and will continue to shop in Chicago — not to mention tourism….

      Hi Dan,

You are probably right. It will help Northwest Indiana businesses — as long as we don’t keep raising our taxes.

My favorite is that cities and towns and counties all over Indiana are complaining that HB 1001 is forcing them to cut their spending, legitimate spending cuts for the first time in decades.

As we cut spending at the local level, privatize state assets, build infrastructure and reduce our reliance on property taxes … we become even more appealing to Illinois residents and businesses.

      Hi Steve,

      You are right.

Just as people and businesses have had to cut back during the economic contraction, so too must the government keep an eye on its spending.

I’m glad that Indiana is able to keep spending in check and run balanced budgets.
