Esther Ku Needs To Step It Up

Esther Ku
I saw Last Comic Standing last night complete with Esther Ku‘s win for this round.
While I’m happy that Esther Ku — Chicago’s own cutie comic — made it into the finals, I’m hoping that she steps it up and moves beyond the stereotypical jokes she has been making into comedy that can transcend race and ethnicity and into more universal themes.
I’m rooting for Esther Ku, but it will be hard to keep wanting her to win if she keep on with the same material that she has so far. The other female comic — Iliza Shlesinger — is funnier because her topics are more universal and not so stereotypical.
I’m still holding out the faith that Esther Ku will show us something different so that we can see that she has grown as a comic beyond the silly Asian girl and into someone who shines the spotlight on the a wider view of humanity.
Of course, a commenter says that Esther Ku might have made it through to the finals so that she can be cast as the show’s villian. The promos for Last Comic Standing don’t show Esther Ku in a good light — too much cackling is driving Esther‘s roommates crazy — so there might be some truth in that prediction.
Esther Ku, I know you can do it — just show us that you can.

I’ve just got to ask…are you rooting for her this hard JUST because you think she’s “a cutie?” or “beautiful?” Is that really a good enough reason to root for a comedienne who, aside from that crazy Mary Mack, is probably the absolute LEAST funny contestant on LCS? If anyone else performed that badly and wasn’t as attractive as you remind us that she is, would you root for them too? Just ’cause she’s trying to sell that ‘oh so wacky cute Asian girl’ thing will never make her funnier, just even more of a parody than she already is.
Hi Marie,
I think everyone who is rooting for Esther Ku is doing so because she’s a cutie. The talent scouts and the host all fawn over her. We’re all hoping that she can show us the funny so we can keep enjoying her cuteness.
You are right that she’s not as funny as the other comics — the guy with the bass is hilarious.
But, I hold out hope that she’ll improve. However, the previews for the upcoming show portrayed her as being annoying. Maybe she’ll end up being the Omarosa of LCS — just not as mean but kept on the show because she bugs the rest of the contestants.
Uh, I thought Iliza was so much funnier… but did anybody see how she turned around and became such a bitch and voted for Esther Ku after she told Esther to her face that she wouldn’t? Then, she said such spiteful things…not at all good-spirited.
Esther Ku is a racist using cheap negative stereotypes for laughs. She is either really bad at satire or just plain racist. This hurts the Asian American community break through the negative stereotypes in mainstream American media.
Hi Sandra and Huu,
Thanks for stopping by and joining the discussion.
As an Asian person it is hard for me to find Esther Ku funny, I find some of her jokes downright insulting (the “ching chong what mom?” joke particularly pissed me off). However, I admit that I also enjoyed some of her stuff, and I can understand the viewpoint that she is easing racial tension with her comedy, though I don’t agree.
I agree that Iliza is more consistently funny, though having seen some of her other material from other shows she’s done I think she gets old really fast and that high pitched voice she does makes me want to disembowel myself. I actually found myself rooting for God’s Pottery when the show kept cutting to Iliza trashing Esther. I’m sorry but even if this is considered a reality TV show I find those sort of rants immature and it aggravates me that the producers wasted so much time making me watch and listen to it. To top it off, she gets even more rant time for the following week (week 9?). The producers really could have done better with the female comics this year, I feel like previous seasons the women have matched the men in comedic skill while never in numbers (Kathleen Madigan, for example is simply hilarious), but this year its completely off.
