Should We Change To A 4-Day Work Week?

Some are suggesting that a way to save energy is to change from the traditional five day workweek to a four day week.
My mom worked a three day work — 12 hours a day or more — before she retired from her nursing job. My dad currently works a four hour week — 10 hours a day — at his office. Even my job works out to be a 4.5 day work week — 1/2 day off on Wednesdays during most weeks (but not all weeks).
If the American workplace shifted hours so that employees worked less days and more hours on those days, would it save energy and fuel?
Could we save taxpayer money if government offices were open 10 hours per day, four days per week? Would it be worthwhile to run schools on a four day schedule?
Would you increase your work hours so that you could have an extra day off?
