I was in Fort Wayne today for a convention and was looking for a place to grab a bite to eat.

I’ve been to the Dash In and Loaf N Ladle on Calhoun before — both great places — but I was looking for someplace new and local that I hadn’t tried on a visit to downtown Fort Wayne.

Luckily for me, right across the street from the Grand Wayne Convention Center on Washington Boulevard is the Old No. 3 Firehouse Cafe located right above the Fort Wayne Firefighters’ Museum.

I entered the museum and let the staff member on duty know I was looking for the Old No. 3 Firehouse Cafe. I took the steps up to the second floor where the cafe is located and took a seat right next to the old fashioned pole that the firefighters used to slide down to their equipment from their upstairs quarters.  The hole was covered with wood and there was a trunk of dalmatians keeping watch over the area so that nobody would pretend like he or she was a fireman and take a slide down the pole to where the fire engines reside.

All of the menu items were named after firefighting themes.

If I had been thinking, I should have written down some of the sandwiches that were offered because the names were fun and everything looked appetizing.   I did write down what I ate because I knew I was going to write up a post as soon as I walked into the building.

My sandwich was the “Hook and Ladder.”  It was a tuna sandwich on a croissant with a pasta salad side — very yummy.  I also tried the soup du jour — pot pie soup — a tasty treat served up by a friendly waitress who made sure to make sure everyone in the cafe had enough to eat and drink.

The bill for the soup, sandwich, pasta salad and soft drink came to $7 and change — not bad at all for a filling lunch in a cool location.  I’ve paid more than $7 to eat food in generic and uninspiring locations.  Paying less than $10 and getting to eat good food in an old firehouse is a bargain!

If you’re ever in Fort Wayne and looking for a great little restaurant to visit, try checking out the Old No. 3 Firehouse Cafe.  If you have kids, they’ll love visiting the Firefighters’ museum and grabbing a bite to eat at the cafe.
