Calling all Indiana University alumni — it doesn’t matter what degree, year you graduated, or campus you attended — you can vote online in this year’s Board of Trustees election.

Veritas Rex points out that there is a conservative choice in this year’s IU Board of Trustees election: Barnes & Thornburg attorney Kelly B. Smith.

Writes Kelly B. Smith in her IU Trustees election profile:

In the current economic climate, fiscal responsibility is of utmost importance. The cost of tuition is outpacing the rise of inflation, making it difficult if not impossible for middle income families to send their children to IU. Furthermore, the quality of instruction and research is not increasing proportionally along with the rise in tuition. The trustees need to take a more active role in examining IU’s finances, seeing that more money is spent on providing top professors in smaller classes.

My wife has two degrees from IUN and she’s on faculty, I’ll let her know! P.S. Did you get my contributor/author invite for http://nwiconnect.blogspot.com ? It’s just an experiment right now — I may end up changing the name. What do you think?

It’s sure interesting how many times the law firm Barnes and Thornburg has come up in conversation this week.

Let’s see one blogger suggested that the new Mayor of Indy Ballard was some kind of patsy because he’s in the pocket of Barnes and Thornburg.

Another blogger suggesting that Jon Costas was chosen by Barnes and Thornburg for AG to ally him with Mitch Daniels, since they can’t quite get control of Greg Zoeller.

Another blogger saying privately, but not to me, that Barnes and Thornburg is trying to get control of Lake County GOP, at the expense of current leadership.

You know what I think? I think that they are a very powerful office, with connections everywhere in the state, and that a bunch of people are jealous. There’s no way any one politician is “in their pocket” … those days are gone.

But they do seem to hire people who want to make change, perhaps even dramatic changes like this lady running for IU Trustee.

      Hi Dan,

Thanks for the post over at NWI Connect.

I like the graphics on the masthead! Looks like a promising site.

      Hi Steve,

I think it is jealousy — it’s a legal powerhouse that has a great reputation. It would make sense that their people are involved in various activities throughout the state.

I’m sure if you look around, you can find attorneys from all of the major Indiana law firms getting involved with various civic and political efforts.
