The United States moves to list polar bears on the endangered species list saying that they are in danger of extinction.

Without getting into the politics of the situation, there is something fun about polar bears. I wonder if it is because of the Coke commercials that play during Christmas time showing polar bears enjoying a soft drink while playing in the snow?

I remember seeing a documentary about a town in Canada where polar bears roam freely. While polar bears are beautiful creatures, one must always remember that they are dangerous animals, as well. The town had bars over every window and an alert system to let people know if polar bears were getting ready to over run the village in search of food.

The video clips that come with the news stories announcing the addition of polar bears to the endangered species list show the majesty of the polar bears. There’s something that we always appreciate in animals that are powerful, yet also beautiful.

On a lighter note, the polar bear global warming video has been proven to be a hoax: http://prayeramedic.blogspot.com/2008/04/global-warming-hoax-exposed-new-climate.html

I of course also think that global warming itself is a hoax, thank you Lieberman-Warner legislation for the coming climate tax!

Check Akismet — my comment on this one got nuked.

    Hi Dan,

I rescued your comment from the spam pit — there’s a lot of stuff in there today so I’m glad you mentioned it because I wouldn’t have noticed it with everything that has been caught today.

Akismet should be trained sooner or later to recognize your comments as being okay, but keep letting me know so that I can retrieve them if they get caught.

    Hi Dan,

I agree with you also. We need to be good stewards of the Earth. I’ve switched out standard light bulbs for compact fluorescent bulbs — just as I did at my old house. I also bought Energy Star appliances and tried to keep the thermostat around 67 degrees F (although mysteriously it always got raised in the middle of the night when I was sleeping).

But, the way the pols go about fixing the environment only seems to help move industry to China and India by allowing them pollute more (because we polluted in the past) while shuttering our industries (because we polluted in the past).

I could be missing something, but it would seem that CO2 shouldn’t be a huge problem because trees and plants are designed to consume CO2 to make O2. And, I’ve read we have more trees now than at any time in the past because we’ve been good at planting trees.

I does seem like a political ploy to shut down the West in favor of the third world. If China is going to set the standard for the environment, we’re all in trouble — Olympic athletes are afraid to stay in Beijing for fear of destroying their lungs.

There is nothing wrong with trying to be better stewards. Where we run into issues is when we hurt humans to help animals and get our priorities out of order.

    Hi Steve,

We need to keep our priorities straight — that’s the huge problem with politics today. People are wildly inconsistent — i.e. Al Gore with his huge mansion and private airplane flights. Or, liberal pols in Massachusetts who oppose windmills in the ocean because they fear running into the wind power generating stations while playing on their million dollar yachts.

There always needs to be a cost-benefit analysis when coming up with environmental solutions. Too often, it is not done in that way and we end up hurting US businesses.

We also need to look behind the rhetoric and at the overall agenda. All too often, it seems that environmental protocols are designed to strip America of economic power and transfer it to third world nations that have no compunction to stop the massive pollution their industries pump out.
