Bill Clinton came to the Crown Point YMCA this afternoon and put on a good political rally for Hillary supporters and other curious onlookers enjoying the fact that Indiana is finally getting some attention from people who usually flyover the Hoosier state on their way to California or New York.

Video: Bill Clinton in Crown Point

Bill said that Hillary Clinton had put in some good words for Crown Point, so that was nice to hear.

I have to admit it was fun to hear and see Bill Clinton do his magic for the crowd. It brought back the good memories of when I was still an undergrad and was living a relatively carefree life.

When I was younger, I voted for Clinton when he first ran. I also helped make phone calls for the Monroe County Democratic Party back in the days before “bring your own phone” phone banks. I also wore an American Federation of Teachers for Bill Clinton pin along side of my UFCW Local 700 pin when I was working at the grocery store making $75 per week.

That was before I had kids, bought a house, and started paying serious taxes. Now my wife and I pay out way more in taxes than I ever grossed back when I was making union wages of $3.75/hour at the grocery store.

There’s the old saying about when you’re young, you have no heart if you aren’t a Democrat …

Those were some good times down in Bloomington. Do they still have dime beer night in B-town?

Seeing Clinton up close and personally brought back some of the good memories of the 1990s back when I was in carefree 20s. Of course, I’m doing better now than I did back then, so I can’t complain.

I have some video of Bill Clinton’s visit that I’ll get uploaded sometime tomorrow. I hope I didn’t forget to turn on the sound on the camera I was using.

Obama supporters, hold onto that HOPE Obama’s selling because that’s all he’s GOT when it comes to getting those CHANGES Made.

Obama claims 7 years experience in the Illinois legislature - Working Across the Aisles, Bringing people together to get good CHANGES passed -as exemplified by 26 good bills with his name on them.

A Chicago reporter says all 26 bills were passed in ONE Year.

      http://wweek.com/editorial/3418/10516/

      EXCERPTS:
But what’s interesting, and almost never discussed, is that he built his entire legislative record in Illinois in a single year.

Republicans controlled the Illinois General Assembly for six years of Obama’s seven-year tenure.

Then Emil Jones Jr. (became the Senate Majority leader), He became Obama’s kingmaker.

Jones appointed Obama sponsor of virtually every high-profile piece of legislation, angering many rank-and-file state legislators who had more seniority than Obama and had spent years championing the bills.

During his seventh year in the state Senate, Obama … sponsored a whopping 26 bills including many he now cites in his presidential campaign when attacked as inexperienced.

Working Across the Aisles/ Making CHANGES = ZILCH

Taking Credit for Other People’s Work/
      INTEGRITY = ZERO

      HONESTY = ZERO

      Nice post there, Chris.

I too used to be a Democrat in my youth and stupidly voted for Ole Slick the first time. I was a Republican before 1993 was over. What was the first thing he did as President? Gays in the military? So much for “focuing like a laser beam on the economy”.

I’m only 23, so I have a lot of learning to do. I’m no Dem, but I also think McCain is a crook, along with Bush. Financially everyone running is corrupt. At the same time, Ron Paul is sort of radical — yet I support him. I believe he’d be better than the other three, yet I don’t think he has a chance of making it. It’s still pretty neat to see someone like Clinton in person.

      Hi Dan,
I’d like to suggest a great book for you. It’s ” free to choose” by Milton Friedman. I would be curious to hear your opinion of the book and if it changes the way you look at politics. I’m not challenging you or dictating what you should do I’m honestly curious of your response.

      Hi Buzz,

I think everyone is a Democrat in their youth.

There’s something comforting about thinking that someone in the presidency will take care of all of ones problems — it’s sort of like having a mom and dad ready to help out. The Democrats love to promise that they will take care of every painful event and provide everything for everyone according to their needs. It’s pretty seductive until you realize that it doesn’t work where it has been tried, whether it’s Gary or Detroit or even in the former CHA high rises that have been torn down after they became unlivable.

Of course, once I got out into the real world and started paying taxes and realized that nobody was going to do anything for me except for me, I moved over into the column wanting less government regulation and interference and more freedom.

I’m all for compassion, but just giving people enough for subsistence isn’t really being compassionate. The only way for people to break free from poverty is to instill optimism and a can-do spirit.

      Hi Dan,

Clinton is charismatic and if you look back at his presidency, he became popular after cast himself as a “new Democrat” and adopted many GOP principles.

People also forget, but Bill Clinton is the one who set up the government’s policy for regime change in Iraq, i.e. removal of Saddam Hussein as America’s policy goal.

      Hi Aaron,

      Good suggestion!

    8. Dan on May 2nd, 2008 9:09 pm

Hey Aaron, I am in the middle of a couple of books right now, but am always open to suggestions for reading. I went to Amazon.com, and I was excited to find that I could purchase this book for only one penny (and in fairly good condition!) + $3.99 for shipping and handling. So for a combined total of $4.00, I gladly purchased the book and it should arrive within 3-14 business days! I just added it to my goodreads widget and will post my review there after I have read it. I will also likely blog on it at my other site, http://www.tyrannywatch.com sometime.

Once again, I am reading a couple of books right now, so I will get to it as soon as I can. Luckily, I am a fast reader so within a couple of months I should be getting started — and sometimes I rotate to get fresh material so maybe even sooner! Thanks for the recommendation, and thanks all for tolerating my ignorance and youth at times ;)

      Hi Dan,
Thanks for taking the suggestion as intended. I think you’ll enjoy it and I’m looking forward to your review.
Chris forgive me for going off topic. In thinking about Gary or Detroit I always held the opinion that if those communities wanted to improve they would. Kind of isolated simple thinking I know. Now that I’ve been exposed to more my opinion has changed, Those kids growing up in horrible neighborhoods with horrible schools. The schools are actually supported and protected by massive bureaucracies that pay for more protection with loyal democratic votes and contributions.
