Takes Issue With Barack Obama’s
Small Town Comments
These are exciting times for all political junkies living in Northwest Indiana. Whether you are a Democrat or not, it’s safe to say that all of the attention NWI is getting from Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton is great fun for the politically minded.
It’s also the beginning of a Hillary Clinton political offensive versus Barack Obama. Hillary Clinton is casting herself as a candidate that can drink a mug of Old Style and down a shot with the common people in a small town while Barack Obama tries to explain the nuances of his comment that small town folks turn bitter when things go bad and end up turning to guns or God as a means of escape, unlike folks in San Francisco and other urban areas.
Reports the AP on Barack Obama’s ‘bitter’ controversy:
Barack Obama is working to diffuse a controversy over his comment that small town voters are “bitter.”
Rival Hillary Clinton has latched onto the comment as elitist, out-of-touch and demeaning. Her campaign staffers have been handing out stickers reading “I’m not bitter”.
The attention the Democratic presidential contenders are giving to the area will be good for Northwest Indiana in ways that have yet to be seen. Any positive publicity has got to be good for an area that is often overlooked because it is often in the shadows of the world-class Alpha city Chicago.
Barack Obama’s visit to Northwest Indiana inspired Hillary Clinton’s Saturday visit to Valparaiso and later on to a pizza place — Bronko’s — in Crown Point which, according to news reports, was packed with local Democratic leaders who just happened to show up at the right time for an unannounced visit. Look for Barack Obama to come back to Northwest Indiana again to counter Hillary’s visit — and vice versa.
The Post-Tribune’s Sunday paper features pictures of Hillary Clinton hoisting a mug of Old Style as well as downing a shot of whiskey. Like Hillary or not, it’s always fun to have see a national figure enjoying some spirits in good old Crown Point.
Plus, it helps show Hillary Clinton as a woman who enjoys hanging out in small towns — contrasting herself with Barack Obama who has been trying to down play his comments about small town residents turning to guns or God when times are tough.
Hillary Clinton’s Northwest Indiana visit may be the start of her turn around in the race — she’s trying to use Barack Obama’s “bitter” comments as a wedge to win over Democratic primary voters.
Reports the Australian Broadcasting Corporation:
Hillary Clinton has battled to keep her White House hopes alive going into a tense 10-day stretch which could define the end game of her enthralling Democratic tussle with Barack Obama.
Anything less than a big win in the Pennsylvania primary on April 22 would severely dampen her hopes of taking the race to the end of the nominating calendar in June, in her long-odds bid to outdo Senator Obama.
But remarks by Senator Obama - labelling working class voters as “bitter” - could give Senator Clinton the wedge she needs to pick up ground in the race, and she took off with the issue on Saturday by suggesting her rival was condescending toward a large segment of US voters.
“Senator Obama’s remarks are elitist and are out of touch. They are not reflective of the values and beliefs of Americans. Certainly not the Americans that I know,” she said at an Indiana rally.
After six weeks of long distance sparring, Senators Clinton and Obama will clash in a face-to-face debate in Philadelphia on Wednesday night (local time).

Somebody needs to show her how to drink a shot.
Hi Buzz,
People at work were commenting on Hillary sipping her Crown Royal.
I personally would have liked to have seen her take a bottle of Jack and drink it Van Halen “Panama” style straight from the bottle! It might encourage some GOP members to cross over in the spirit of bipartisanship to vote for her in the Indiana primary.
(Note to those Democratic election challengers — the reason why candidates come to the area is to convince people to vote for them. If someone usually votes “R” and has decided to pull a “D” ballot, it just means that one of the Democratic candidates’ money, time and efforts were successful and should be celebrated by allowing that person to vote. Why else would candidates come to NWI and other places in Indiana?)
