David Cook rearranges Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” and makes the song sound brand new.
I like David Cook’s version. He’s got a good singing style and a great position — the last up on American Idol. He’s going to do well in the voting tonight.
Randy: “I think you’re probably the most original and the most bold contestant we’ve had.” “You might be the one to win the whole lot.”
Paula: “I’m blown away. I’ve got to tell you how smart you are. How brave you are.” David Cook is able to stretch the boundries without going over the edge.
Simon: “It could have been insane or amazing and it was amazing.”

Puhleeeze! David Cook did a great job, but it is NOT “his version” . This was Chris Cornell’s version. There was nothing risky, brave, or original about it. It was a great cover of Cornell’s arrangement of Michael Jackson’s song. Props to David Cook for an outstanding performance. BUT props to Chris Cornell for the genius of the arrangement.
Hi Brother Breeze,
Thanks for pointing out the Chris Cornell version of Billie Jean, otherwise we’d all be thinking that David Cook had come up with the idea all on his own.
Seeing as David Cook had Ryan Seacrest announce “Here’s David Cook performing Chris Cornell’s version of Billie Jean” I seriously doubt he was trying to pull off the idea “on his own”
Hi Erin,
I saw a news report on Fox Chicago last night about David Cook’s singing of “Billie Jean.” They mentioned that a lot of people might not have heard Ryan Seacrest saying that the version was Soundgarten’s because the crowd was yelling. I know I didn’t pick up the Soundgarten reference while watching the program Tuesday.
It was a pretty cool version, even if it was Soundgarten’s arrangement.
Maybe the publicity will help Soundgarten’s record sales as people who’ve never heard their version go out to buy a copy for their collections.
Every contestant on the show is singing some artist’s song. And, there are alway variations to the original to fit the restricted timeframe or please the audience. David Cook’s verson of Billie Jean is so much better than Chris Cornell’s. Just listen to Chris Cornell’s. Frankly, his vocals are pretty bad and he can’t hit the high notes. The most exciting part of David Cook’s version – the holding of word “I” is NOT part of Chris Cornell’s version.
Hi Devon,
Thanks for the clarification regarding David Cook’s version of Billie Jean.
You’re right — since each artist is singing a song in their own individual way, it is appropriate to give that particular artist the credit for singing the song in their own style — even if it is derivative of another artists’ previous works.

I don’t care WHOSE version it was…it F’in ROOOOOOOOOCKED!!!!!! He is not particularly physically attractive until the passion pours out of his vocals & veins……….but when it does, OMG!!!! Orgasmic!!!!!
I am ready to buy a CD of David Cook’s – I think he is awesome, he is so original and doesn’t mind taking chances.
