David Archuleta sings John Farnham‘s “You’re The Voice.”

I can’t really get into the song, but it’s probably because it is the first time I’ve heard it.  However, the song did well internationally back in the 1980s, according to Wikipedia, and the crowd is yelling so David Archuleta will do well no matter what he sings tonight.

Randy:  “It was a strange song choice for me.”  “Very nice.”  “I don’t know the song.”

Paula:  “You couldn’t have picked an American composer.  Just kidding.  You could sing the phone book and we’d fall in love with you.”

Simon:  “I actually didn’t like the performance at all.”  Simon says it was a “theme park” song performance.  It was a “ghastly song” that you sing with animated creatures, Simon says.

David A. Should NEVER do that kind of thing again. It is not his style. I think he also was trying to lease Simon. Simon told him he needed to do something up beat. He could sing the phone book but he needs to stay where he really is way out front. Where America Loves him. Things like imagine. I feel that was his best.Simon let David be David.
    Than sit back and enjoy.

Listen people, the kid didn’t choose the song to please anyone. Listen to the lyrics and you’ll know why David sang it. For Randy and company to not know that song is downright shameful! They’re supposed to be the experts.

The song is a message against tyranny and oppression and using your voice to fight for what is right. What’s so weird about that?

Even though I didn’t know that song, I though he did an amazing job and I found myself singing the song in my car later. He sang it so well that it got stuck in my head so I went and downloaded it on to my i-tunes. I mean, if that’s not an American Idol, who is?

    Hi John,

Thanks for the further explanation of the song. I know a lot of people didn’t realize the significance of the lyrics. It also shows that David Archuleta is not just a singer, but also a thinker.

When David A. sang the song, I sat up and took notice–the beat, the lyrics. I didn’t know the song, never heard it before. However, something about it made me do a little research. Duh….the song was a HUGE hit internationally in the late 1980′s and won song of the year for John Farnwell, who made all the awards with it. I think the judging panel, Randy, Paula, and especially Simon had egg over their faces….judges, and knew nothing about this international hit. Just shows to me that David had a bit more thought behind this song and the judges came across as UNINFORMED. Since hearing it, go to You-Tube and put in the title–definitely listen to John Farnwell’s version and you will really be hooked. For age 17, David did an incredible version, himself!

    Hi Sandra,

It shows that David Archuleta has a broad musical interest that goes beyond just the music of here and now.
