David Archuleta’s performance of John Lennon’s “Imagine” last night generated so many dial-in votes to his American Idol toll-free number that he should be safe Thursday night, reports DialIdol.

David Archuleta is expected to win American Idol if he keeps up his singing prowess.

Writes MTV’s Chris Harris about David Archuleta’s American Idol front-runner status:

From the looks of things, 17-year-old David Archuleta is following in the footsteps of another 17-year-old singer — Jordin Sparks, who, at the conclusion of the sixth season of “American Idol,” was crowned the victor, making her the youngest winner in the show’s history.

For Archuleta, a young Salt Lake City denizen with boyish charm, a stylish look, silky vocals and overly goofy modesty, the road to the season-seven finale is still a long ways away, but early on in the competition, he seems the clear — and perhaps unassailable — front-runner. Even acerbic judge Simon Cowell, who doesn’t seem at all impressed with this season’s crop of contenders, called Archuleta out as the one to beat during Tuesday night’s episode.

The “American Idol” judges found themselves floored on Tuesday night after a stirring performance by 17-year-old David Archuleta.

One of the youngest contestants in the competition, Archuleta put in a moving performance at the conclusion of the second week of “American Idol” competition, with his rendition of John Lennon’s “Imagine.”

“Dog,” judge Randy Jackson began, “that’s one of the best vocals I’ve ever heard on the show. You’re singing with maturity way beyond your years… That was brilliant.”

Paula Abdul went one step further with her praise for the blue-eyed teen.

“That was one of the most moving performances I’ve ever heard,” Abdul said. “You’re destined for superstardom.”
