The key to getting Gary, Indiana on board with the South Shore line expansion to Lowell and Valparaiso is simple — run a spur line connection to the Gary - Chicago Airport — reports John Byrne in the Post-Tribune.

Frankly I’m a bit sick of Gary. Gary has taken billions of dollars and literally wasted them. They’ve been messing with this airport for decades and can’t seem to get a whole lot accomplished.
How about Gary walks away from control of the airport, the RDA needs to step in and take it over. How about Gary slashes it’s city budget, starting with removing the Mayor’s son from “consulting” status.
The rest of NW Indiana is ready to grow, let Gary and Bob Harper (here in Porter County) bloviate about their problems with the growth and job creation.
Hi Steve,
I’m with you on the need for Gary to pare back the budget. It’s losing population, suffers from high taxes, and doesn’t have the economy to keep new businesses running if they start up in the city. Also, its educational system is in shambles — the School Board wastes money and many students need to start stepping up to learn so that they can make a better future for themselves and Northwest Indiana.
But, building the spur line to the airport makes sense. The Gary Chicago Airport has potential to be a relief airport for Chicago. The key is making it an option for Chicago travelers.
Adding a rail line into the airport will make it more attractive to Chicago residents. Making it an viable option for travelers makes it more likely that a major carrier will start to conduct passenger operations at the airport.
And, if passenger service isn’t an option, having a rail line means that a freight operation could also be another lucrative operation.
I’m with you as far as the need to stop wasting money, but I don’t see improving the transportation infrastructure to the airport as a waste of money because of the potential it has to build the air transport economy in Northwest Indiana.
