‘Taxed Out Of Homes’
Filed Under Michigan City, property tax crisis
Michigan City area homeowners socked with huge property tax bills are being taxed out of their homes, reports the Post-Tribune’s Stan Maddux.
John Waller, a retired sewer worker from Chicago, owns a four-bedroom house built in 1910 in Michigan City’s Sheridan Beach neighborhood a few blocks south of the lake.
He said taxes on the house worth about $350,000 have nearly doubled to $8,000.
“Everyone is upset. We’re not millionaires,” Waller said.
Lakefront residents already have one lawsuit pending against LaPorte County over the hiring process used to select the appraiser for compiling the new assessments.
