The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear a case involving Indiana’s voter ID law that requires people to show an identification card at the polls.

It makes sense to me to require positive identification of voters.

Identification is required before people can board airplanes, enter the Federal Courthouse in Hammond, cash checks, obtain a mortgage, rent an apartment, or before completing a myriad of other daily transactions.

Critics complain that it is difficult to obtain identification cards in Indiana, but the truth is that it isn’t too difficult to obtain an Indiana ID card.

Proving residency can be done with an affidavit, if someone hasn’t established any financial contacts with the outside world, i.e. a phone bill, bank account statement, etc.

Everyone is required to have a Social Security number, so that shouldn’t be an issue. If someone isn’t eligible for a Social Security number, there is an exception that covers that case.

People should already have a copy of their birth certificates and passports in their possession, or be able to obtain replacements with a little effort.

People already in government programs can obtain a letter from their caseworker, social worker, or probation officer that meets the state requirements as their “secondary document.” Or, they can use their Medicare or Medicaid card.

My immigrant in-laws were able to obtain Indiana identification cards with little effort.

Of course, they already had their own forms of primary and secondary identification — including their permanent residence cards (green card), bank account statements, and Social Security cards.

My mother-in-law did have to submit a residency affidavit, but that wasn’t any more complicated than swearing under oath that she has lived with us since a certain period of time and intends to continue living with us. Most people have some sort of bill — NIPSCO, cell phone bill, etc — or benefit statement that is less than 60 days old that can be used for the purpose.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the voter ID law is upheld, but one can never tell until the decision is made by the justices.

I am surprised the Indiana legislature didn’t focus on strengthening security of absentee ballots, since that is where there is a great potential for abuse and fraud.
