Is Idea Of Iraqi ‘Tet’ Fantasy?
Filed Under Election 2008, Iraq War, war on terror
Will Iraqi insurgents try to influence the 2008 U.S. Presidential election by launching a terrorist-filled Iraqi-style “Tet” offensive designed to break the American will?
From Austin Bay on Real Clear Politics:
Sometime within the next six months or so, al Qaeda or Saddamist terrorists will attempt a Tet offensive.
No, Middle Eastern mass murderers don’t celebrate the Vietnamese festival of Tet, but trust that America’s enemies everywhere do celebrate and systematically seek to emulate the strategic political effects North Vietnam’s 1968 attack obtained.
This spring marks the 40th anniversary of Hanoi’s offensive (yes, 40 years, two generations). It will also mark the umpteenth time American enemies have attempted to win in the psychological and political clash of an American election what they cannot win on the battlefield.

For me, this just reiterates the reason for John McCain to be elected our President. If the rest of the world thinks that attacking us will get them Hillary, they may attack us and end up seeing that we respond forcefully when attached … with leadership that will crush them.
Hi Steve,
You may be onto something.
People around the world seem to assume that the Democrats are the party of “peace.” History proves that when push comes to shove, they will act to protect American interests, if they feel that they are threatened. FDR (WWII), Kennedy (Cuban Missile Crisis), LBJ (Vietnam) are just a few of the Democrat presidents who were in charge of major wars.
Since Vietnam, there has been a strong anti-war movement in the Democratic party. It’s latest form is the out of Iraq movement. The mainstream Democratic party plays to them, but when push comes to shove, they always end up the use or continuation of the use of force.
If this wasn’t the case, the Democratically controlled Congress would have already cut off funding to our military and brought them home from Iraq.
The problem is just what you said. Someone may think that they can influence the outcome of the election. It happened in Spain. I wouldn’t put it past the bad guys trying to do something to influence our election.
Of course, such a plan could backfire and show the need to election someone with leadership abilities.
