The Post-Tribune reports that a freight train carrying UPS and US Mail derailed earlier today.

A train carrying mail and UPS packages — and likely quite a few Christmas presents — derailed at about 6:30 a.m. today near U.S. 12 and Indiana 249 in Portage.

Almost 40 freight containers spilled along the tracks the crash and officials say they’re still investigating the cause. No injuries were reported.

There were no injuries, according to the newspaper.

The Northwest Indiana Times didn’t cover the Christmas present angle, but they did mention that the rails were closed for about 2 hours and South Shore service during that time was affected.

Portage police reported 15 to 20 train cars derailed on Norfolk Southern tracks about 6:40 in the area of U.S. 12 just east of the bridge entrance to Midwest Steel.

The train was being pulled by three engines and the third was off the tracks along with the freight cars, most of which were flat beds carrying semi trailers.

Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District spokesman John Parsons said just one westbound train — 112 — was stopped and was prevented from going through the area.
