Tax Issue: Trust Us, We’re The State Gov’t
Filed Under COIT, Chet Dobis, Income Tax, Lake County, Lake County Council, tax revolt
State Rep. Chet Dobis says trust us, we’re from the state government in an effort to sway Lake County Council members to do the unpopular and vote to impose a brand new tax on already overburdened Lake County taxpayers.
Lake County Council members won’t change their income tax stance, they promise — unless they change their mind to impose a new tax burden on Lake County taxpayers.
They also will promise to keep the taxes low — 1% for the time being until the state slashes funding for Lake County and the tax needs to rise to 4.5% or even higher in order to make up for the budget shortfall because nobody can figure out how to cut back and save some money.
Maybe Chet Dobis’ reassurance that the state isn’t going to mess with Lake County like they have done all of those other years will get someone on the Council to forget that the State of Indiana always treats Lake County poorly. I’m sure they’re laughing at Lake County downstate right now.
Look for an income tax for Lake County since the Council is going to fold like a cheap lawn chair, just as Buzzcut predicted councilmember Tom O’Donnell would do.
The Lake County Council is being played by the state. Unfortunately, the Lake County Council lacks the fortitude needed to make any major decisions that are in the best interests of Lake County residents.
Lake County Council members can’t even do the obvious and get rid of Will Smith, Jr. who was convicted of tax fraud. There is no way that they have the ability to not get played by those downstate who hate Lake County.
Don’t worry, though.
State Rep. Chet Dobis has this to say:
State Rep. Chet Dobis, D-Merrillville, said last week the council must trust state government on the tax issue and act. “They’ve got some work to do and the clock is ticking.”
Maybe something good will happen from all of this mess.
Voters might decide to end the life-long tenures of all of the incumbents who rotate throughout Lake County government like taxpayers owe them something.
