The Indiana Dunes makes the New York Times‘ travel pages as one of the nation’s exclusive beach front destinations.

The Indiana Dunes, just 40 miles southeast of Chicago, rise to great heights along the Lake Michigan shore, looking like a swatch of Cape Cod sneaked into the Midwest. A legacy of the ice age, the Dunes lure second-home owners to quiet communities strung along the beachfront. Its promoters call the region Indiana’s Crescent Coast, Casual Coast, Duneland, Dune Country, even the Lake Michigan Riviera. But the Dunes need no hype.

While I like the idea of spurring Northwest Indiana’s economy and having our area known nationwide as a premier beach destination, I like the Indiana Dunes the way it is right now — inexpensive, natural, and open to the masses.

I wouldn’t want the Indiana Dunes to lose its natural qualities by becoming overdeveloped like so many East Coast beaches.

Saying that, I wouldn’t mind the state building a hotel in the Indiana Dunes State Park to allow more tourist dollars to flow into Porter County.

Eugene Meyer’s article describes some Indiana Dunes’ communities as being “largely off limits” to the public.

This notion is pushed by some elitists who live in a certain number of acres in the Dunes, but it might not hold up to legal realities since all of the beachfront communities have public roadways supported by taxpayers’ dollars.

Also, the state owns a certain portion of the beach along Lake Michigan and those public lands are open for public access, despite what some locals might say.

People living in the dunes can regulate how many people can visit by limiting parking, so make sure to read all of the local signs and look for public parking available in the federal park areas.

Special thanks to Marci Oddi at the Indiana Law Blog for spotting the Indiana Dunes travel article in the New York Times.
